More than 4,500 participants came together on October 16 at Memorial Field in Concord for the 24th annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk and raised $476,510 to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. This year’s event brings Concord’s fundraising total to $7,481,964 raised for the American Cancer Society since 1993.

Andover has always had a strong presence at Making Strides in Concord. This year, Andover participants helped the Hakuna Ma Ta Tas team raise $1,762; Mimi’s Marauders raised $2,050; Concord Moose and Moosettes raised $2,263; and Sarah’s Soldiers raised $7,394.

“Today’s event was a moving example of passion in action,” said Kimberly Laro of Andover, Volunteer Director of Publicity for the event. “Our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk ensures no one faces breast cancer alone by bringing the community together, funding innovative breast cancer research, promoting education and risk reduction, and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.”

While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts and Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,450 will die from the disease this year. In New Hampshire, an estimated 1,120 will be newly diagnosed and 170 are expected to die from the disease
