Andover Historical Society July News

By Suzy Norris, Andover Historical Society

Well, spring has come, albeit grudgingly, and after two work Saturdays in late April and early May, we are up and underway.

“The Secret Garden” in the stone cellar hole of the Richard Potter home, is raked out, ready for sitting and contemplating; a shady, beautiful escape on a hot summer’s day. The Red Caboose, Railroad Museum, and Emon’s Store are tidied up, set for summer visitors. This year’s Museum Exhibit features thirty Arch McDonnell prints of New Hampshire railway stations including an original McDonnell watercolor of Potter Place donated to AHS by Robert N. Roach, Jr.

It’s always fun to come and poke around to see what’s new or reacquaint yourselves with the old. This year, thanks to the imagination and hard work of Gail Richards and Luan Clark, Emon’s Store has extra pizazz to it. One of the front windows feature World War I memorabilia from Andover. Inside the store there’s an 1895 Cottage organ, originally from a home in East Andover, now on permanent loan to us from the Franklin Historical Society

There’s also an array of cool stuff for sale at the store along with raffle tickets for this year’s Raffle Basket crammed with gifts and gift certificates. We will be selling raffle tickets on the Green on July 4th.The drawing will be Fair Day, Sunday, August 6. The 2018 calendar will also be for sale on the Green on July 4th. This year’s calendar features contemporary local scenes and photographers. Don’t miss it!

Our June presentation, Kevin Gardner on Stone Walls, will have happened by the time this goes to press, but at the risk of rushing the season, mark your calendars for our second speaker on October 19, Glenn Knoblock on Historic Weathervanes, at the Grange. More details to come, closer to the date.

Huge thanks to the following volunteers who cheerfully and readily gave time and muscle to help us out this spring: Nancy Teach; Ellen Langlais; Elizabeth Stevens; Jan Hostage; Proctor Academy students, Finn Weber from East Andover, and Zach Barnes from Contoocook.

We honor, encourage, and need, community participation. Lending a hand is a great way to visit even if sometimes over the hum of a vacuum cleaner or the drone of a leaf blower.

We are always looking for volunteers who would like to be Station Masters. Mentoring with “an old hand” is a great way to get to know the ropes. If you are interested in station mastering, call Gail Richards. 735-5697
