“If I Am Not For Myself, Who Will Be For Me?”

April 9 at 7 PM at Proctor's Stone Chapel

Press Release
Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti protrays George and Martha Washington’s runaway slave Ona Judge, who ended up in Portsmouth, NH. She will perform Monday April 9, at the Stone Chapel at Proctor Academy.

On Monday, April 9, at 7 PM at Proctor Academy’s Stone Chapel on Andover’s Village Green, the Andover Libraries are proud to present Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti as she portrays “Oney Judge Staines,” George and Martha Washington’s runaway slave, who escaped and made her way to New Hampshire in 1796.

Gwendolyn’s artistry is well-suited for this performance. Based on the story told in “Never Caught: The Washington’s Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge,” by Erica

Armstrong Dunbar, the presentation depicts Ona Judge’s journey from Virginia to Portsmouth, NH, as she struggles to make a new life while never being free to leave the old one behind.

Ms. Quezaire-Presutti, well-known for bringing African-American stories to life, comes to Andover via the New Hampshire Humanities To Go program as a living history event. Admission is free.
