First Thursday Hike at The Fells

Thursday, May 2, 11 AM

Join Brick Moltz, Education Director at The Fells, for a one-hour hike on The Fells property. These informal, moderate walks will be an opportunity to get a little exercise, spend time out in the landscape, and perhaps discover something new about the property once owned by the John Hay family. Members: free, non-members: included with regular admission fee. No reservations necessary. Meets at The Fells Kiosk. First Thursday Hikes will not occur during the summer months but will resume in September. The Fells Historic Estate and Gardens, www.thefells.org

Birding by Sight and Sound

Saturday, May 4, 7:30-9 AM

If it’s early May, we are in the middle of the great spring bird migration. Join local expert Peter Newbern for an early morning easy to moderate bird walk, learning some tricks about how to identify bird songs and calls by interpreting what it seems like they are singing, followed by a chance to hear and see some of the neo-tropical birds returning to NH and to habitats further north.  Meets at the Fells Kiosk. Heather Pruning

Friday, May 10, 9:30 to 11:30 AM

Learn about gardening with hardy and beautiful heather as you join members of the Northeast Heather Society while tending The Fells Heather Bed. Bring lightweight hedge trimmers (if you have them), dress in layers and wear gloves. Free to all. Meets at the Heather Bed, beyond the Rock Garden. National Public Gardens Day
Friday through Sunday, May 10-12, 10 AM to 4 PM

Join The Fells in a nation-wide celebration of public gardens. Explore the beauty of The Fells and discover the colorful spring blooms in the Rock Garden and the fragrant blossoms of early flowering trees and shrubs. Admission is free to all the entire weekend. Everything You Need to Know about Birds and Bees: How We Support Pollinators and Birds with the Plants We Grow”

Join garden writer Henry Homeyer for a workshop about creating beautiful gardens that also attract and sustain our native pollinators and birds. Gardening for beauty and our personal satisfaction can also enhance habitat for countless insects and animals, if we make informed choices in our plant selections. Enjoy these beautiful New England landscapes captured by talented plein air artists. These artists have participated in the Vermont Institute of Science (VINS) Plein Air Festival and/or Artists Weekend at The Fells. We have brought these two wonderful organizations together to highlight their work with our natural environment. Included with regular admission fee. Ecology Exhibit: Listening to the Land

In his book A Beginner’s Faith in Things Unseen, environmentalist and nature writer John Hay encourages us to listen to nature in order to discern our connection with all of life. Through ecology programs, interactive exhibits, journaling opportunities, and even “Forest Bathing,” we hope to teach our visitors how to listen to the land at The Fells and in their own backyards. Out and About at The Fells: Spring Babies, Blooms and Bugs

May bursts forth with the colors and sounds of Spring! We will investigate the best of the Spring Season. Join the Lake Sunapee Protective Association education staff in this program for preschool age children and their caregivers. Free. No reservations necessary. Meets at The Fells Gatehouse.
