The Andover Libraries need your help with two projects! We are hoping to deliver books to folks
who cannot make it to the library. Generous patrons have volunteered to help, but we do need
to know who these appreciative friends and neighbors might be. Please give us a call if you
know anyone who could benefit from our offer of delivery.

Summer is right around the corner, as is the Summer Reading Program, which is a national
effort designed to keep young students reading while engaged in a specific topic over the
holidays. Starting on July 8, right after the July 6 Fairy House Construction from 9-11 AM in
Andover, and ending on August 3, readers in grades 1-6 will receive a “book buck” for every
visit to either of the Andover libraries. This summer’s theme is SPACE. At the end of the
program we will have a celebration with games and ice cream, and our young readers will be
able to exchange their “book bucks” for prizes donated by the community. Over the course of
the summer we’ll be offering special space-themed projects, like launching rockets, building
solar system models, and that all time favorite: staging an egg drop contest. We are also hoping
to take participants to the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center. Please alert us if you want to
share ideas and/or time with us. The sign-ups will occur at both libraries, and we certainly
welcome summer visitors.

The NH Department of State Parks is offering passes for summer visits to most of its parks. You
can pick up a day pass at the library, which is good for two adults and four kids-for free! Stay
tuned for more details.

The Andover Libraries Book Club, open to one and all, will be reading Kenneth Roberts’
“Arundel” for our meeting on June 27 at 7 PM at the Bachelder Library in East Andover. “Arundel” is an outstanding, five-star, Pulitzer Prize-winning historical novel. The capture of Quebec becomes a necessity during the American Revolution, and who better to lead Washington’s troops than Benedict Arnold. You can obtain a copy at either library, but be forewarned; this ragtag army struggles through the Maine and Canadian wilderness with little food and heavy “bateaux” to paddle and carry. Keep some food and drink at hand for yourself, dear readers.  Check out the best-sellers and new books/DVDs at the libraries and note the series collections while you’re there-just in case you need to catch up! And don’t forget the Little Free Library at Highland Lake’s Town Beach; both libraries sponsor this by exchanging books periodically. You can join the reading exchange by taking a book and adding another. It’s a popular program all over the country.

Remember, the WABL Walkers meet Mondays and Wednesdays at 9:30 at the Bachelder
Library (WABL) for an excursion up and down the hills of East Andover. Our usual route is up
Chase Hill to Emery, where we continue to the road’s end and reverse, or branch off onto Dyers
Crossing to the Rail Trail and thence back. We’re always happy to vary the pace and route, and
we have tea and check-outs afterward. By the way, the views are spectacular!
