Through the Reading Glasses September 2019

By Janet Moore

Having just read the current copy of “The Concord Monitor’s Insider”, I thought I’d pass on a suggestion from this week’s books editor, Robbin Bailey, of the Concord Public Library. “Save Me the Plums” is food critic and reviewer Ruth Reichl’s latest entry in the fascinating literary world of, well, food!  Her interest began at the tender age of eight, when she picked up an old issue of “Gourmet”, and discovered Robert P. Tristram Coffin’s article about eating lobster in Maine. So real was the experience to her that she imagined every lobstery fragrance and tart bite, heard the steaming pot hiss, and warmed herself by the bonfire’s heat.  If Reichl’s eloquent descriptions of Coffin’s elegant writings are anything to go by, we are all in for a treat.
