Many benefits from this ancient Chinese exercise

Press release

Assuming the COVID-19 epidemic has lessened and The Andover Community Hub has reopened its doors by that time, two eight-week Tai Chi classes will begin at The Hub on Thursday afternoon, April 30.

“A Beginner’s Introduction to Tai Chi” will be held at 4:30 PM, and “Tai Chi Continuation” at 3:30 PM.  Beginning students will learn how the daily practice of the simple movements of this ancient Chinese exercise regimen can improve immune function, reduce stress and hypertension and strengthen legs, back, and abdominal muscles; improve balance; prevent or relieve arthritis; improve sleep; and eliminate a number of aches and pains.

The continuation class is intended for those who have previously learned the beginning movements of Tai Chi Gong and the first section of the 108 movement Yang Tai Chi form.  In this class, they’ll continue their studies to complete the Yang form. The fee for each eight-week series is $80.

Both classes will be taught by Bill Halacy of Concord. Halacy began his study of Tai Chi, acupuncture and Asian medicine following his retirement as Concord’s Chief of Police and now teaches in various locations in the greater Concord area.

Originally developed for self-defense, Tai Chi has evolved into a quiet, slow-moving form of exercise that’s now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions by people of all ages from teens through seniors. As Halacy says, “If you can sit, stand, and shrug your shoulders, you can do Tai Chi.”

Pre-registration is required by contacting TheAndoverHub@nullgmail.com or the Hub office at 735-5509.  Checks can be mailed to The Hub at PO Box 157, Andover NH 03216.
