SSR Compactor Coming to Transfer Station

Traffic to be re-routed when compactor is in place

By Marj Roy, Town Administrator

It seems that Mother Nature and Jack Frost have teamed up to wreak havoc, but spring must be just a few days away. When warmer weather arrives, so will the single-stream compactor at our Transfer Station.

The compactor will be located adjacent to the cement dock near the Recycling Building, and at the east end of the compactor will be a small office/observation site.

Several building ideas were looked at for this building. We are very fortunate that RP Johnson and Son sold us a ready-to-set-up shed that is insulated, wired, and has a propane heater and windows. The shed is valued at approximately $8,000 and RP Johnson and Son sold it to the Town for $3,000.

New Traffic Pattern

When the compactor is in place, the traffic pattern at the Transfer Station will change. When you arrive at the Transfer Station you will see two traffic lanes divided by Jersey barriers. The right lane will go to the solid waste hopper-office, and the left lane will go to the single-stream compactor and the glass container.

Your normal traffic pattern should be:

  • Take the right lane for garbage disposal as usual

  • Go all the way around the Recycling Building

  • Take the left lane to the single-stream recycling area

The construction and demolition debris container, the metal bin, and the burn pile will remain where they are.

As changes take place, the attendants will direct patrons through the Transfer Station. There will also be new signage to help with the transition.

Enjoy the warmer weather, and please remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
