Selectmen Plan to Establish Bridge Maintenance Policy

Meeting on Monday, June 16, at 7:30 PM

By Jim Danforth, Andover Board of Selectmen

Currently, Taunton Hill Road bridge over Mountain Brook has a “serious” substructure issue, and four other bridges have “poor” condition ratings. With very limited funds and a minimum eight-year period for State Municipal Aid, these bridges will have to be repaired using only Town funds.

In addition to addressing large-scale bridge repairs, Road Agent John Thompson is developing a list and estimates for non-structural repairs that are required for safe operation and maintaining the required state bridge standards.

On Monday, June 16, the Andover Board of Selectmen will be addressing the issue of a bridge maintenance plan at 7:30 PM at Town Hall, with the goal of establishing policies for the maintenance of all Town bridges (including the Cilleyville-Bog Bridge, whose restoration fund is nearly exhausted).

If we have a revised estimate from New Hampshire DOT on the Lawrence Street bridge, it will also be on the agenda. If we exclude the Lawrence Street Bridge, the current estimate for addressing currently-known bridge deficiencies is between $250,000 and $300,000.
