John W. Twomey, July 2, 2014

John W. Twomey, 79, a resident of Northfield since 1975, died on July 2, 2014, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia following a period of failing health.

John was born on January 2, 1935, in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the son of Mortimer and Gladys (Whidden) Twomey. He spent his youth in Danbury, graduated from Andover High School, and later attended the New Hampshire Vocational Technical Institute in Laconia and the US School of Professional Paperhanging in Rutland, Vermont. He lived in Franklin for six years before moving to Northfield.

John served his country in Germany with the US Army from 1957 to 1959 and was called back into the service from 1961 to 1962.

He was a “jack of all trades” who held a variety of jobs during his lifetime. He especially enjoyed his work as Building Supervisor at the historic Belknap Mill in Laconia. For about 10 years, he ran his own papering and painting business, Hanging Around Wallpapering.

John worshiped at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Meredith, where he served as sexton for about five years. Most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family.

He leaves his wife of 47 years, Carol (Purdy) Twomey of Northfield; sons Brendan J. Twomey of Northville, New York, and Brian J. Twomey and wife, Jane, of Manchester; and two grandchildren, Abe Twomey and Phineas Twomey of Manchester.

There were no calling hours, according to John’s wishes. A service was held on July 12 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Meredith. Those wishing may make memorial contributions in John’s name to Trinity Episcopal Church, PO Box 635, Meredith 03253, or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 304, Chicago IL 60611.
