South Danbury Church Fair on July 25

Readings by Donald Hall and Mary Lyn Ray

Press release

The South Danbury Church will hold its traditional country fair on Saturday, July 25, from 8 AM to 3 PM. As a special event – in anticipation of the 150th anniversary of the church in 2017 – the church will be launching a restoration project for the church building with a short ceremony at 10 AM, followed immediately by a reading by everyone’s favorite former US Poet Laureate, Donald Hall. Hall, who is also a 2010 National Medal of Arts recipient, has deep family roots in South Danbury and especially with the Church, where his grandmother Kate played the organ for more than 60 years, and his great-uncle Luther served as minister.

At 11 AM, everyone’s favorite children’s picture-book author, Mary Lyn Ray, will also be reading. In addition to hearing her read some of her books, this is a wonderful opportunity to talk with Mary Lyn about her writing process and the stories behind her stories. Both Don and Mary Lyn will have books available for sale and can sign books.

The Fair opens at 8 AM with its perennially popular yard sale and will include a “collectibles and treasures” section as well. There will also be a Crafts Table and a balloon artist on hand making special “creatures.” The Baked Goods Table always offers a dazzling array of delectables for sale, including homemade pies – some of them still warm from the oven!

The Fair Lunch will feature hot dogs and hamburgers and a host of salads – garden, potato, and pasta and coleslaw – as well as homemade baked beans for a cost is $8 ($5 for children). Sodas will also be on sale.

During lunchtime, the inimitable Doug Windsor will serve as auctioneer extraordinaire, matching eager bidders with invaluable treasures and entertaining the audience throughout.

The South Danbury Church (an open and affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ) is located at 1141 Route 4 in South Danbury. For more information about the Fair, call 768-3191.
