For the Andover Libraries, the Fourth of July was a huge success, from the sale to the float. Thank you, Deb Brower and friends, the Southworths, Caroline Moulton, Susan Chase, and the indomitable driver, Nancy Teach, for making our parade float, We Like Big Books, so much fun that we were awarded first prize.

Well, of course, readers deserve first prizes all the time, and to borrow a phrase from Lydia Thisell in last month’s Beacon and apply it to reading, “I can feel it in my heart and brain. It feels so exciting!”

Once again, the combined forces of librarians Priscilla Poulin and Gail Fitzpatrick succeeded in organizing every aspect of the book sale event on the third and the Fourth. It went off like clockwork, and we thank every Andover resident and those from away who donated their time, energy, used books, and financial resources to ensuring the Libraries will be well-funded for another year.

Gail Richards, Sandra Graves, Caroline Moulton, John Cotton, Deb Brower, Susan Chase, and Alex Southworth: kudos to all of you for running the sale and doing pack-up and drop-off.

Enjoy the sun-filled days and star-filled nights. Slip in a book now and again.

On the docket for autumn: In September, the Andover and Wilmot Libraries will sponsor an Astronomy program, complete with a viewing of celestial bodies. Noted local dog trainer and author Dee Ganley will offer a Read to the Friendly Dog program.

In October, Professor John Greabe from UNH Law School will return to discuss the latest decisions from the US Supreme Court. Put these events on your calendar now!
