Always there for others

People - Deaths - 150811 GayDouglas Lee Gay, 67, of Andover died at his home on North Street on Tuesday, August 11, 2015. He leaves behind his wife Joanna Sumner; his daughter Laura Gay Majerus and her husband Doug of Boise, Idaho; his brother Chester Gay and his wife Eileen of Loudon; his sister Viola Gay of Seattle, Washington; many nieces and nephews; and four step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Timothy Gay in 1999 and his sister Penny Gay in 2013.

Doug was born on November 7, 1947 in New London, the son of Clarence W. and Jean (Grover) Gay. He graduated from New London High School in 1965, went to Keene State, and served in the US Army. He was very proud of his military service. Doug had boundless energy and worked hard his entire life.

He started working at the early age of 10 at Messer’s Dairy in New London. Doug worked as a general contractor. He started his own concrete business and then was the superintendent at the Town of New London Wastewater Department before going back into business for himself.

Doug was inventive and creative. He built an apartment complex in New London and designed and built the commercial building at 46 Main Street in Andover. He rebuilt his and Joanna’s home on North Street, as well as a cottage in Maine.

Doug enjoyed socializing and helping others. From repair work to snow removal, he was always there for others. He was an avid lover of all animals, big and small, and had an incredible bond with his two cats, whom he absolutely adored.

There will be a graveside service held at the Old Main Street Cemetery in New London at 1 PM on Sunday, August 16. To honor Doug’s personality, please come in casual attire.
