Mark Cangiano, September 27, 2015

Long-time Proctor Academy trustee

Leon Mark Cangiano Jr., of Brookline, Massachusetts and Andover, New Hampshire, died on September 27, 2015 after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Mark was born in Boston on November 27, 1941, the son of Leon Mark, Sr. and Eleanor (Holt) Cangiano. After graduating from Milton Academy (1959) and Middlebury College (1963), he joined his father’s insurance business, which had been founded in 1929. Mark assumed ownership of Inland Underwriters Insurance Agency in the mid-1970s and enjoyed a successful career until he retired in 2009.

He was active in the insurance industry in the Boston area and was proud to be part of the North End/Waterfront area revitalization by developing an unoccupied warehouse into apartments in 1976. He served on the Board of Norfolk and Dedham Insurance Group and the Immigrant Learning Center in Malden and was a long-time Trustee of Proctor Academy in Andover.

Mark was a life-long Boston sports fan who especially cherished the Red Sox’ World Series Championship in 2004. He loved outdoor sports of all kinds, particularly golf and skiing; walking his beloved Brittany spaniels Harry, Carney, and Titus; and long, convivial dinners with his and Karen’s many friends.

He leaves his wife of almost 40 years, Karen (Peterson) Cangiano and his son, Leon J. Cangiano, both of Brookline; his step-mother, Barbara Cangiano of Maryland; his sister, Brenda (Cangiano) Godwin of Andover; 14 nieces and nephews, including James C. Godwin of Reading, Massachusetts, who succeeded him as president of Inland Underwriters; and 22 grandnieces and grandnephews.

Gifts in his memory may be made to the Leon Cangiano Scholarship Fund at Proctor Academy, PO Box 500, Andover NH 03216, which was established by Mark and his father to provide scholarship support to students who are graduates of Andover Elementary/Middle School.

His family will invite friends to celebrate his life with them at a later date.
