Recreation Committee Minutes, June 18, 2016

Condensed from approved minutes

Committee Members present: Tom Frantz, Alan Hanscom, Sue Norris, Tim Norris, Heidi Murphy, and Drew Donaldson

Soccer

  • Fees are $30 before July 1 and $35 afterwards.
  • Only 24 kids signed up so far, but numbers are growing rapidly.
  • There is still interest in kindergarten soccer.
  • Recreation Committee suggestion is to have kindergarten through second grade soccer for the few kindergarten kids interested.
  • July 5 will be the first pick-up soccer game.
  • As always, the field needs to be relined every five days.

Mark Chagnon of New Hampshire Soccer Association Referees will provide all refs for a fee of $200, plus the fee paid to individual refs. This organization seems like a great answer to a perennial problem and was embraced by the Recreation Committee.

Swimming

  • We have lost our swimming instructor. Andover families will need to consider other towns, such as the Pleasant Lake program.

Cycling

  • Drew Donaldson and Josh Norris are planning a table on the Village Green on the Fourth of July to try to generate interest in grades three and up. The $35 membership ($30 for siblings) will yield a cool t-shirt, already designed, and five group rides meeting on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 PM.
  • Bikes must be able to change gears, and helmets are required.
  • The first group ride will be dedicated to bike safety and handling skills.
  • As usual, all parents involved in helping with mountain biking would need to get background checks.

Andover Recreational Track

  • We had our first practice on Wednesday.
  • So far, there are 10 kids.
  • We’ll meet Monday, Wednesday, and optional Saturdays at Merrimack Valley.

Recreation Department Waiver

  • A new standardized waiver is being created by Sue Norris and Jen Hauser.

Blackwater Building

  • The exterior of the building is now painted.
  • The sink is ready to go in and be connected.

The next meeting will be at AE/MS on Tuesday, August 23, at 7 PM. No meeting in July.
