Tai Chi for Seniors at Wilmot’s Red Barn in September

Build balance, flexibility, and strength

Press release

Senior-safe, senior-friendly Tai Chi will begin in September in Wilmot. Considered the best for balance, flexibility, and strength, Tai Chi has been proven by the Mayo Clinic to be a gentle art form which the body adapts to easily.

The Wilmot Community Association will offer Tai Chi at The Red Barn in Wilmot starting on Tuesday, September 13, and Saturday, September 17. The Tuesday program is from 10 to 11 AM, and the Saturday program is from 9 to 10 AM. No experience is needed. The cost is $8 for drop-ins or $24 for a month.

The instructor is Marcia Wyman of Inner Peace Tai Chi. She is certified through the Oriental Healing Arts.

Participants learn a Modified Yang form. Yang is a very expressive movement that feels like dance. The moves are graceful and coordinate
with the foot movements.

It is an over-all workout without any discomfort. Participants listen to their bodies and bring the movements in a “safety zone” that does not leave sore
muscles.

Founded by the Oriental Healing Arts Association in Plaistow, the form was created so seniors could enjoy the health benefits of Tai Chi. Many scientific
studies have proven that Tai Chi reduces pain and stiffness. Not only the body, but the mind benefits with improved ways to cope with stress and depression. Better heart and lung function have also been reported.

Classes are one hour long. Qi Gong warm-ups and cool-downs are a part of the program. Deeper, more relaxed breathing is encouraged. Tai Chi helps in maintenance, prevention, and improvement of over-all health. Quality of life is therefore improved.
