Long-Time Andover Fire Chief Retires; Stephen Barton Steps Up

Thanks people of Andover for their support

By Rene Lefebvre

For the last 40 years or so, I have had the great privilege to serve as your Fire Chief. You have welcomed me into your homes and have honored me with your trust and friendship. In truth, I have loved the job.

But, time has a way of creeping up on you, and though the spirit is more than willing, the body no longer has the stamina required. I officially retired as your Fire Chief on December 31.

Your new Chief will be Stephen Barton. Stephen has served as your Deputy Chief for some time and has the skills and training necessary for the position. Stephen will do a super job, and I am very pleased that he has accepted the position.

I want to thank the Andover firemen that I have had the honor of serving with. They have become my brothers and sisters. There are not many like them.

In closing, I want to say that I am well and retirement is not due to any health issue beyond a bit of age. Again, I want to thank the wonderful people of Andover, and the outstanding fire department, auxiliary, and police department.

You are all the best!

Goodbye, and stay safe.
