Remaining Hopeful for a Second Nesting

By Donna Baker-Hartwell
As of June 20th, our loons on Highland Lake continue to hover near the loon nesting area. After an unsuccessful attempt to nest a few weeks ago, the loons appear to be preparing to try again. Loons are known to lay another egg or two eggs in the same year if the first nest fails. Failure can be caused by a predator – wild or domestic – or flooding of the nest due to heavy rain or wave activity. If in the next few days, the loons begin to sit again on a nest, we could expect a chick or two to appear approximately 4 weeks later.
