Loon Egg that Did Not Hatch

Ever wonder what a loon egg looks like? Here is an egg that did not hatch and was left in the nest many years ago. (It has since been blown out to preserve it.) Loon eggs are about 3 ½” long. They are the color of coffee ice cream or natural coffee filters, with dark chocolate-colored splashes. Please note that eggs are illegal to collect and today all abandoned eggs are sent to the New Hampshire Loon Preservation Committee. Photo Credit: Donna Baker-Hartwell
