Andover Highway Department Update on New Building

Ready for superstructure to be set

By Les Fenton
Construction of a new highway department building is underway.

The construction progress for the new municipal facility has advanced to the point of being ready for the superstructure to be set. Delivery of the shell and structural steel will be Thursday, November 16, 2023, and the base, binder course of pavement is to be set on Friday, November 17, 2023, (weather permitting).

The concrete footings, foundation walls, and bearing pads for steel columns were completed on October 3. All in-ground work is complete. Backfilling the foundation was completed on November 6. The unsuitable subsoil in the parking lot, access driveway, and apron for truck bays were excavated and replaced with structural fill and compacted in preparation for paving. Other ground work placed prior to backfilling was as follows: underground conduit for electrical service, communication line conduits, propane supply, future generator pad conduit set, septic tank connection, and floor drain line from wash bay connected to holding tank. The interior floor area was filled and compacted to the level to begin in-slab plumbing installation and setting the eventual radiant slab heat grid.

This next month will see work continue with our contractor Construx, expecting to complete erecting the steel and enclosing the shell with roof by Christmas. Temporary power and temporary heat will be utilized over the winter to allow interior work to continue unabated. This is a change to the previously announced 4-month break in construction activity and will allow the Town to take ownership by mid-summer 2024, as opposed to mid-fall 2024. The date of a “Topping Out” ceremony will be announced when the last roof beam is to be placed. All are welcome!
