Earth Day is celebrated every year worldwide on April 22. On this day, organizations and
individuals focus on educating the public regarding ways to promote more eco-friendly habits and lifestyles, as well as actively going out into their communities and doing volunteer work that
will both enhance their communities and make their local environments healthier places to live.
Beginning in 2020, The Andover Community Hub and The Andover Conservation Commission
joined together to celebrate Earth Day with a five-day-long, volunteer-led, roadside cleanup.
For the past three years, local organizations and individuals have continued this tradition during the week around Earth Day.
This year the tradition continues with The Hub, the Conservation Commission, the Andover
Public Libraries, and AE/MS working together and inviting the community to celebrate Earth
Week, beginning Monday, April 15, and continuing through Monday, April 22. During this week, blue trash bags and plastic gloves will be available at The Hub, the Bachelder Library, the Andover Library, and both the East Andover and Andover Post Offices.
Individuals are encouraged to pick up trash in their own neighborhoods and streets, or
wherever in town they’ve noticed a need. Those who participate can be entered into a raffle
for one of our eco-friendly prizes by submitting a picture of their cleanup effort to The Hub via Facebook or email.
Volunteers are reminded to practice traffic safety and awareness while cleaning up roadsides. Filled bags should be taken to the Andover Transfer Station any Wednesday or Saturday, from 7 AM to 5 PM.
As a special focus for Earth Week, The Hub will host an Open House from 10 AM to 12 PM, Saturday, April 20. There will be activities for all ages, including a birdhouse-building workshop (pre-registration required at theandoverhub@nullgmail.com, $5 donation requested), free insect house-building, and other activities, and information about local eco-friendly efforts, organizations, and ways to make a difference. All who attend will be entered into a raffle for one of the eco-friendly door prizes.
