Wilmot, NH – Henry L. Stevens, 86, formerly of Jewell Road, died Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen. He was born on July 28, 1938, the son of Ralph W. Stevens and Audrey (Atwood) Stevens Patten. He was a native and lifelong resident of Wilmot. He graduated from Andover High School in 1957 and was a member of the baseball team, which went to the finals his senior year. He worked for the town of Wilmot, and he also worked for Les Shaw and Wayne Atwood. Henry was a talented carpenter and woodworker and spent many years building houses for Wesley B. Woodward & Son throughout northern New England, as well as his own house. In 1985 he became the caretaker of Ridgeback Acres owned by Glenn and Gail Matthews in Wilmot, where he was in charge of property maintenance and caring for livestock. He was especially fond of horses.

He wintered in Ocala, Florida from 1998 – 2008. Henry served in the National Guard and the Army Reserves. He was a member of the Wilmot Volunteer Fire Department from the age of 16, and also was a Forest Fire Warden for many years. He had been a member of the Grange since the age of 14. Henry was a former member of the Masons and IOOF. He loved being outdoors hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed horseshoes, camping and raising beagles. He was most proud of the Wilmot Volunteer Firehouse on Route 11 that he helped design, plan and build. He also designed and built the gazebo on the same property.

Henry was predeceased by his son, Michael H. Stevens in 2008. His surviving family members include his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Annette E. (Keyser) Stevens of Wilmot; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Carol Stevens of Manchester; a daughter-in-law, Marie Pelletier of Colebrook; three grandchildren and their spouses, Caitlin and Nick Loving of Manchester; Zachary and Caeleigh Stevens of Holderness; Jake and Rachel Stevens of Campton; six great-grandchildren, Rosalind, Silas, Louisa, Casey, Benjamin and Leah; a brother, Lee (Carol) Stevens of Keene; two sisters, Nancy (Joe) Clark of Boscawen, and Marie Nowell of Concord; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours were at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main Street, New London, NH on Friday, September 6.  A graveside service was held on Saturday, September 7, in Bunker Hill Cemetery, Wilmot.
