Dear AEMS Family,

Brrrrrr…. It has been several days of inside recesses for everybody this week. We are ready to get outside and play! Speaking of inside recesses, if you are cleaning out and have Legos or Lincoln Logs, or anything of that sort and you would be willing to donate it to the school we could put it to good use. It would enhance our indoor recesses and we would use it for other opportunities as well.

NO SKIING OR SKATING TOMORROW! It is too cold! Ellie George has worked it out with Ragged Mountain to extend the program another week. When we don’t ski we don’t skate.

Congratulations to the participants in the Andover Lions Club Peace Poster Contest! The creative art work submitted by the sixth grade students made it tough to choose finalists. The theme was “Our World, Our Future.” Our students did really well and two were chosen as district finalists. Special congratulations to Cyrus King, Will Furtkamp, and Clay Farley!

Chants of USA! USA! USA! could probably be heard as far away as Vermont last Friday. We celebrated Nick Fairall and gave him a “send-off” to the 2014 Winter Olympics. Students shared with Nick how he has inspired them to work hard and follow their dreams. Nick is bringing all the posters and banners that the students made for him to Russia for inspiration. Nick autographed our Eagle Code for K-4 students.

BREAKING NEWS…. Andover has another elite athlete who has just qualified for the Olympics. Kris Freeman, nordic skier, will go to the Olympics for his 4th time! Go Nick and Kris! AEMS will be watching and cheering for you!

One of the great things about technology is the bridge it can create between home and school. Math learning doesn’t have to end when the school day ends. Our 1st-4th grade students are all enrolled in IXL Math. Our 5th-8th grade students all have Khan Academy accounts. Math skills can be practiced at home. Progress is tracked and parents and teachers can access it at any time.

Progress Reports will be coming home with all students in K-8 on Friday, January 31st. Watch for them. We are now half-way through the second trimester.

Chinese New Year will be celebrated on February 6th. It is the Year of the Horse. It has been a fourth grade tradition to present a dragon parade throughout the building. Students spend time learning about the history and culture and create colorful dragons. There is also a Chinese buffet for lunch. All students become involved in this festive day.

Our AEMS Eagles are playing some great basketball this season. Try and catch a home game. Our Girls team and Boys White Team have games here on January 27th beginning at 3:30 with Kearsarge. Our Boys’ Blue team doesn’t play at home again until February 3rd when Kearsarge comes to town for a 3:30 start. Check out our website for the complete schedule.

Let me know today or early tomorrow morning if you want a ticket and a seat on the bus to the Monarch’s Hockey game on January 31st. Our AEMS chorus will be performing. Ticket information is attached. Our final order is being submitted on Friday afternoon. It will be a fun night!

If you have any questions or concern, please do not hesitate to call or stop in.

Sincerely,

Jane Slayton
