Loons on Bradley and Highland Lakes This Summer

Cormorant and weasel add drama

Life for Bradley Lake's loon family was very peaceful in early August, with the adult loon pair raising their two chicks. But around the 10th, a cormorant arrived (a species not seen at Bradley Lake for a decade), causing great concern and commotion among the loons. In other loon news, the Highland Lake loon pair were unsuccessful again this year -- their eggs never hatched. Donna Baker-Hartwell found nothing but shells; the weasel seen swimming from Stella's Beach to the island may have feasted on the abandoned eggs. Photos: Rebecca and Jonathan Schwartz
